(Mango, Barlito, Mango, M&J Cazuela from top left, clockwise)
CHECK YOUR MAPCHICK MAP for locations and other food options.
A note about breakfast. Some hotels (including Privelege Aluxes) have breakfast included in your stay. PLEASE venture out for at least one breakfast from below. It’ll be worth it, we promise!
Breakfast
**M&J Cazuela recommended and frequented by locals. Get a Cazuela. It’s a hot, gooey, melty mess of breakfast amazingness served with tortillas. It’s our new favorite. See pic above. Closed on Tuesdays.
**Mango Café (mid island, go early so they don’t run out!)
**Barlito Get a Panini, split it! it’s HUGE and honestly my (second) FAVORITE thing on the island (see Cazuela)
Alexia y Giovanni loncheria in the Market on Guerrero. It’s the first one on the left. Make sure you are sitting in the red chairs.
Jax is good for gringo breakfast
Ruben’s–New, small, adorable, great food. Order the Mortadella for breakfast. Across from the market on Guerrero
Rooster— Great fresh bread and COLD A/C inside.
French Bistro
Bucaneros has a very authentic Mexican buffet if you are adventurous (always full of locals)
Café Moguaga
You really can’t go wrong with breakfast anywhere. I have never had anything bad!
Lunch
**Playa Lancheros (south end). Order the Tix-n-Xic fish. Thank me later. They have my favorite guacamole on the island. It’s a beach club and they have a place to swim with Nurse sharks (out on the dock).
**Kash Keken Chuc for Ribs. They deliver. Have your hotel front desk call for you.
Taco stands or carts are pretty good (look for the white “pepsi” stand on the north side of the road at Hidalgo and Lopez. Yummy tacos, tamales or whatever they have decided to cook that day. Taqueria Glenssy.)
Jax—good for fish-n-chips or gringo food (owners are from Texas).
Dinner
**El Varadero (not to be confused with El Veradero del Oscar). This is a Cuban restaurant next door to the old Chuuk Kay. Look for the blue gates and walk back into the driveway behind the “kitchen.” It’s very tiny and has maybe 8 tables around a dock. We had chicken fricassee and Ropa Vieja. Both are amazing! Great (strong) mojitos, too. We had a great breeze and no issues but you might pack bug spray during the summer months. Not great for toddlers only because there is no railing on the edge of the dock. GO HERE. TRUST.
Limon great restaurant in the colonia near the Super Express. Stop by to make a reservation. Closed on Tuesdays. It’s a little pricier but not outrageous. Great for date night. The owner used to own a popular beach club and transformed the first floor of his home into this cute restaurant. Get the pineapple dessert. Share it.
Rolandis for Pizza. So good! They deliver as well.
Freddy’s (second restaurant on the right as you enter Hidalgo from the north end) Order the Pork Chop, world famous. Closed on Tuesdays.
Olivia’s–beautiful Greek restaurant on Matamoros. Go by early and make a reservation. They usually have a 6:00 seating and an 8 or 8:30. Great atmosphere! Closed Mondays.
**Bally Hoo – On the marina behind the Pemex gas station (you really can’t see it until you are in it). The restaurant is on the dock. Order the Fish Tacos. Best in the world! Not good if you’re in a hurry, they are on island time here. Good place for lunch, too.
Abuela’s – Family restaurant near Ixchel Beach Hotel (on the street that goes next to the West Tower (not Hidalgo). Super cute and family run. They run on Island Time so relax and enjoy the company.
Feeling adventurous and have a golf cart? Go find Taqueria Cachirul (formerly Ball Park Tacos). They open around 8 but they are the best tacos you will ever have! It’s BYOB and you’ll spend less than $6 a person. Check the map, it is near the Super Express that is down in the Colonia (mid-island). It is a bright yellow corner building. Also worth visiting nearby is Deysi y Raul’s on the corner. Fabulous empanandas and the family is wonderful.
**Wouldn’t think of going to the island without eating here.
